Sweden's Government was known to be the first feminist Government. They had made a clear commitment to promoting gender equality in Sweden in all policy-making. Inspired by their initiative there were other countries, which now include France, Mexico, Canada, Spain... and the list goes on, who have followed the suit.
Yet in October 2022, with the new government at the helm, they decided to drop the term 'feminist' from its foreign policy. It was something that came as a shock but they did assure that this shift doesn't signify a renouncement of the commitment to gender equality.
However, it does raise concerns about the value placed on gender equality, particularly in terms of women's representation in the corporate world.
There is no doubt that women do have an unquenchable thirst to rise on corporate ladders. However, despite these aspirations, women remain underrepresented at all levels, not to mention those of color and diverse backgrounds. Factors like gender pay gap, bias and stereotypes, lack of mentoring and sponsorship, and unconscious bias in recruitment and promotion processes are some of the unique set of challenges within the Swedish corporate landscape.
Some Data That You Should Know
According to a bi-annual report by Statistics Sweden in 2022, women held 67% of executive positions in the public sector in 2020, indicating significant progress toward gender equality.
However, as we move to Sweden's business sector, the corporate world remains predominantly male-dominated. In 2020, only 10% of companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange had women chairpersons, a mere 13% had female CEOs, and 36% of board members were women.
Data like this just shows one to two reasons why women who love climbing ladders cannot do so, as there is lot more to it that concerns their underrepresentation.
Why does it concern us? How we help in bridging the Gender Gap
